Solar Batteries and Its Types

Introduction

Bsically a solar battery is a battery that stores energy from a solar PV system. The solar
panels which are connected to the system are used to absorb energy through the sunlight
thereby converting that energy into electrical energy. Later on, they are transferred to our
homes through the invertors in the form of electricity.
But how do they work?
The solar batteries work by storing energy during the day for use at night. They absorb the
energy radiated by sun through a semiconductor material such as silicon. The energy then
knocks the electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. Their pupose is to store as much
energy as it can so that they can be used later in times of emergencies. You’ll only send
electricity back to the grid when the battery is fully charged. And you can only draw
electricity from the grid when the battery is depleted.
For the solar panel system, a good quality battery with abundant of power capacity should be
used. As solar panels don’t have much capacity to store such high levels of energy, this is
where batteries come into use. Their lifespan is quite high and can be upto 15 or more years.
With time, there should be an update in the solar panels as well as batteries for more storage
of electricity.

Types of Solar Batteries

There can be various types of batteries used for solar panel systems. Some of them are listed
below:
  • Lead acid – They are among the cheapest in the market as their use is mostly for home grid systems. But they are going outdated due to their poor resistance in the solar panel system.
  • Lithium Ion – The quality is far better when it comes to these batteries. Their durability is quite good and they have a longer lifespan despite being a bit expensive.
  • Saltwater – These are new in the storage industry. They rely on saltwater electrolytes. Unlike other batteries which get drained out after a few years, this battery can be easily recycled. Although they are still under testing before being introduced in the market.
